About London
London is a patchwork of villages that happen to share a river. Start at Borough Market with a coffee and a toastie, then follow the South Bank past Tate Modern as the Thames traffic drifts by. The British Museum and National Gallery are free, so dip in rather than marathon them. Sundays mean flowers on Columbia Road and curry on Brick Lane; clear evenings mean Primrose Hill or Hampstead Heath. Ride the top deck of a bus, and save the Tube for distance.
Best time: April–June, September–October
