About Edinburgh
Edinburgh is a city of two halves and a lot of stairs. The Old Town tumbles down the Royal Mile from the castle, all narrow closes, cobbled Victoria Street and pubs around the Grassmarket. Across Princes Street Gardens, the Georgian New Town is calmer, leading down to Stockbridge's Sunday market and the riverside Dean Village. Climb Arthur's Seat or Calton Hill for the view, eat by the water in Leith, and in August expect the Fringe to take over every spare room.
Best time: May–September
