La Tomatina

An hour-long tomato fight in the streets of Buñol, on the last Wednesday of August.

La Tomatina takes place in Buñol, a small town about 40 km west of Valencia, on the last Wednesday of August, which is 25 August in 2027. The tomato fight itself lasts around an hour in the town centre, and entry is by ticket only, with numbers capped. Wear old clothes and shoes you are happy to throw away, swimming goggles to protect your eyes, and leave anything valuable behind. The rules are simple: squash tomatoes before you throw them, and never tear anyone's clothes. Most visitors base themselves in Valencia and come in by morning train or on an organised coach, so sort out transport when you buy your ticket. Bring a change of clothes for the trip back.
